Wednesday, November 13, join us at Stanze della Fotografia for the screening of the documentary Remnants of Memory, produced by the Canobie Films Foundation and directed by Michael Arlen Davis.
Immersed in the evocative atmosphere of the city of Venice, the photographer Charles Johnstone navigates the canals and streets of the lagoon in pursuit of a new project dedicated to its essence. His aim is to celebrate the beauty of everyday life and endangered crafts. Through his lens, Johnstone documents Venetian newsstands, using photography as both a map of the city’s unique cultural landscape and a record of its historic figures, whose presence is gradually fading but remains integral to Venice's soul.
From this research an eponymous book was born, with the documentary recounting its creation and highlighting another artisanal craft worth preserving: bookbinding. Both these trades endure thanks to Johnstone, who crafts a small yet powerful work of art through his photography.
The screening of Remnants of Memory will take place on Wednesday, November 13, at 5:30 pm at the Stanze della Fotografia. The documentary, approximately 30 minutes long, will be introduced by a talk with Denis Curti, Director of Stanze della Fotografia, and photographer Charles Johnstone, followed by a Q&A session. The talk will be held in English, and the documentary will feature Italian subtitles.
By attending the event, you can visit the exhibitions Helmut Newton. Legacy and Whispers - A Julian Lennon Retrospective free of charge. After the screening, an aperitivo will be offered by Distilleria Nardini.
The photographs of the project will be on display from November 13 to 24, 2024.
The documentary will also screened on Friday, November 15, and Saturday, November 16, at 6:00 pm in the video room of Stanze della Fotografia, with free admission.
